‘Adventureholic: Extraordinary Journeys on Seven Continents by Land, Sea, and Air’
16th January 2024A Sussex Business Times’ book review by Sam Thomas.
I have known Neil for a few years now and still remember the first time I heard him speak at an event about some of his amazing expeditions and life. It had such a profound impact on me, showing that with a positive mindset, curiosity and courage we can achieve so much in life. I have mentioned a few times that, as much as I love reading, it usually takes me forever to finish a book and love how audible has been a game-changer for me. As well as purchasing the book, I chose to listen to it on Audible. Read by Neil himself, it truly is an incredible, inspirational listen.
In the exhilarating world of exploration and adventure, the book is a compelling testament to a life lived on the edge. With a captivating foreword by Bear Grylls and endorsements from renowned adventurers like Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Richard Branson, Major Tim Peake, Rebecca Stephens, Steve Backshall, and Charley Boorman, Neil’s book is a roller-coaster ride around the globe, chronicling three decades of audacious expeditions that push the boundaries of human capability.
One of the remarkable aspects of ‘Adventureholic’ is its ability to transport readers/listeners to some of the most remote and challenging terrains on Earth. Neil takes us on a breathtaking journey to the iconic Mount Everest, the expansive Arctic and Antarctica, and various deserts, jungles, and oceans. His vivid storytelling provides a front-row seat to these daring escapades, allowing readers/listeners to feel the adrenaline, the exhaustion, and the sheer triumph of conquering the unknown.
Neil’s versatility as an explorer shines through as he employs a multitude of methods for his adventures. From climbing and trekking to riding, driving, and flying, his willingness to embrace unconventional modes of travel adds a layer of unpredictability to each expedition. And who could forget the audacious act of paddling a bath? This whimsical escapade is just one example of his playful spirit, reminding readers that adventure can take many forms.
The narratives within ‘Adventureholic’ serve not only as a source of entertainment but also as a wellspring of knowledge, inspiration, and confidence. Neil’s tales echo with the resilience and determination required to overcome the formidable challenges posed by nature. Readers/listeners are not only immersed in thrilling adventures but are also encouraged to believe that almost any ambitious endeavor is possible with passion, commitment, and the courage to take that crucial first step.
The book’s final chapter, aptly titled ‘Nine Lives and How I Lost Them’, provides a sobering reality check. As much as the pages are filled with tales of triumph, they also serve as a cautionary guide for those who may be underprepared, overconfident, or lacking in common sense. Neil’s honesty about the risks involved in his chosen lifestyle adds a valuable layer of authenticity to the book, making it an essential read/listen for aspiring adventurers.
‘Adventureholic’ is not just a book about exploration; it’s a celebration of the human spirit’s indomitable will to seek the extraordinary. You can hear Neil’s passion for adventure in every word, infecting listeners with a sense of wanderlust and a desire to embark on their own thrilling journeys. The book acts as a catalyst, urging individuals to break free from the ordinary and embrace the unknown, reminding us that life’s greatest treasures often lie beyond the confines of our comfort zones.
In conclusion, ‘Adventureholic’ is an enthralling and uplifting read/listen that captures the essence of a life lived on the edge. Neil Laughton’s extraordinary journeys are not just tales of conquest but lessons in resilience, passion, and the unyielding pursuit of the extraordinary. This book is an invaluable addition to the library of any adventure enthusiast, offering a passport to the world’s most challenging terrains and a roadmap to unlocking one’s own potential for greatness. In a world saturated with information, ‘Adventureholic’ stands out as a beacon of genuine exploration and celebration of the human spirit and will urge you to take that first step on your own exciting journey.
