Becoming confident on camera
14th February 2025An interview with Kevan Smith, of Epiphany Content.
When executives and founders sit down with Kevan Smith, they often share one of their biggest fears: “I hate being filmed. I hate making videos.” From his Brighton-based Epiphany Content Ltd., Kevan helps hesitant executives show up confidently and authentically on camera.
He’s equal parts coach and director, with roots at the London Film Academy. And his work is based on a simple truth — the most effective videos mix real personality with strategic planning. These days, he shows C-suite executives and company founders how to shine on camera by being themselves.
“People think they need to be perfect,” Kevan says. “But it’s not about being perfect. It’s about sharing ideas that your best clients will find interesting.”
His approach is both considerate and engaging. Rather than pushing clients into stiff, over-rehearsed performances, he collaborates with them to develop scripts and topics that feel natural. “My clients’ content should feel like they’re having a conversation with a friend. And my job is to highlight their strengths throughout the process.”
The Epiphany Squared process
During his sessions, Kevan uses his Epiphany Squared process to guide clients through four essential phases:
1. Managing camera anxiety – He coaches clients on overcoming the natural tension that surfaces when facing recording equipment.
2. Building clear messages – Working closely together, Kevan helps uncover content topics and develops a content strategy that reflects genuine expertise.
3. Natural recording sessions – The filming process is all about finding the client’s comfort zone. Preparation and structure are the foundation for showcasing confident authority.
4. Content scheduling – Clients can focus on the relationship-building part of their business while Kevan handles the scheduling of their content. A recent client, who leads a successful accounting firm in Kent, noted: “Working with Kevan put me at ease from start to finish. His approach brought out my best, and the resulting videos matched my company perfectly.”
The methodology
His method centers on finding middle ground. He treats scripts as flexible guides rather than fixed rules, creating room for genuine self-expression. “Strong content blends thorough planning with personality,” he says. “While scripts give direction, your genuine personality is what creates that true connection.”
From his seaside base in Brighton, Kevan’s work is all about connection and relationship building. His clients create videos that spark real interest and tell meaningful stories while capturing their message beautifully and authentically.
Avoiding common video mistakes
He steers executives away from common video mistakes. “People tend to chase vanity metrics and online validation,” Kevan shares. “But the people you actually want to do business with are just looking for connection. They want to know who you are. They want to know what you stand for. And they want to know that they can trust what you say.”
He goes on to say, “In my work, it’s all about building that ‘Know, Like, Trust’ bond. And nothing solidifies that bond like sharing what you know in an authentic, helpful voice. The key is in focusing on sharing content that will help your audience in some way. Whether that’s helping them feel connected, sharing something they’ll find interesting or beautiful, or giving your knowledge freely and helping them in their everyday lives, relationship-building has to be at the focus of the content that you create and share.”
Advice for video newcomers
For those new to video, Kevan shares straightforward advice: “Everyone has what it takes to make effective videos that they will be proud of. You just have to find the approach that works best for you. And my work is all about helping you find that approach.”
Beyond the content: ‘Brighton United’
His work extends beyond individual coaching. Through the growing community he founded, ‘Brighton United’, his work is all about connection and shared understanding. And whether it’s members of the community or business leaders, his vision centres on helping others amplify their voice as a way of finding alignment and genuine connection.
Kevan’s background and vision
Kevan’s background shapes his methods. His shift from years working on film and television sets through to coaching CEOs and founders on sharing their message, he’s found a unique method that combines technical know-how with a knack for bringing out authenticity and passion in his clients. He knows the tests of building recognition while staying true. And his approach helps leaders build their message on a foundation of their values and the ‘why’ of the work they do.
“Even as you grow, your core message will continue to resonate with your audience,” he says. “And when your content reflects core values that your audience can trace, that helps you build trust and a voice of credibility.”
