County Business Clubs’ Wine of the Month January 2025
16th January 2025Condesa De Flores Cava Brut
As we come into January, it’s typically cold, dark and snowy. Everyone is recovering from the Christmas period in terms of extended festivities and budget spend. For me, January is the hardest month of the year and so going “dry” is the last thing on my mind! To lighten the load this month, I have chosen a bottle of fizz which is great value at only £6.25 from your local Tesco store and brings a bit of sparkle to the longest month of the year.
My appreciation of sparkling wine started with Cava around 35+ years ago, which was served by my mother, Jan, as an aperitif at family gatherings and celebrations. As a wine, it has always had a good depth of flavour, more robust than Champagne due to the large amount of sunshine in Northern Spain. Cava has always represented great value from typically between £4.50 to £10 a bottle. I would definitely recommend visiting some of the vineyards around Barcelona, if you ever visit the North Eastern part of Spain.
This wine is made from local white grapes Macabeo, Parellada, Xarello grown in and around Barcelona. Condesa de Flores Cava Brut is made using the traditional method and further aged in cool dark caves situated under the winery to produce an elegant wine with delicate mousse and fresh apple and citrus flavours.
Michael’s tasting notes
• Golden colour, nice bubbles.
• On the nose, fruity notes abound with a slight smokiness coming through.
• On the palate it is light fruity, fresh apple and we have tropical notes, delicate honey and pineapple with citrus backbone.
Food pairing for Cava
• Works well as an aperitif or with savoury starters such as smoked salmon, mushroom pate or marinated anchovies
Where to buy?
This wine is widely available from small and large Tesco’s, it well worth buying to drink now or at the end of dry January.
