Domaine Julien Cote de Nuit-Villages 2019

With the march towards Christmas starting to gather pace, I wanted to look at some higher quality wines that come from one of the world’s most respected wine regions.

Background of wine and vineyard

Domaine Julien Cote de Nuit-Villages 2019 is the perfect elegant red for the winter. An excellent expression of Burgundy’s renowned terroir and highly prized area in Eastern France steeped in centuries of winemaking heritage. Situated in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, this vineyard’s soils are a mosaic of limestone, clay, and marl, providing ideal conditions for Pinot Noir grapes the primary wine for Burgundy. The vineyard practices emphasises sustainable viticulture, allowing the fruit to express its true character while at the same time respecting the environment. The 2019 vintage was characterized by a warm, dry summer that ripened the grapes to optimal maturity while maintaining excellent acidity. This combination resulted in wines that are elegant, with a fine tannic structure and vibrant fruit flavours.

Tasting of the wine

On the nose the wine, reveals a bouquet of ripe red berries, cranberries, raspberries, and cherries followed by subtle hints of violet and wild herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannins, offering a harmonious balance between fruitiness and mineral tension. Flavours of red plum and a touch of spice together with the wine’s acidity provides a lively structure that extends the wine’s finish, leaving a lingering impression of purity and refinement. Our team loved this wine!

Food pairing with this wine

This vintage is flexible in its pairing potential, excelling with traditional Burgundy cuisine such as duck à l’orange, roasted chicken, or mushroom risotto. Its approachable style also makes it suitable for early enjoyment as we found but also has the depth and elegance that will improve further with cellaring over the next few years.

Overall, Domaine Julien Cote de Nuit-Villages 2019 is a quintessential example of Côte de Nuits’ finesse, showcasing a vintage that brilliantly balances fruit richness with bright minerality. It’s a wine that not only reflects the greatness of its terroir but also the skill and dedication of the domaine crafting it. This wine promises to delight both connoisseurs and casual wine lovers alike.
