June Wines of the Month
14th June 2019White Wine
Koshu 2017 Grace Kayagatake. Yamanashi
province. Japan.
Price £21.00
Japan isn’t exactly known for its wines but everything this great island puts its hands to it does exceptionally well… think Japanese denim and whisky. They can immerse themselves in the culture of other nations and produce examples of what other cultures are famous for that can exceed your expectations. This Koshu from Grace winery is no exception. Light and floral in style, the freshness and elegance of this wine is quite remarkable. Delicate flavours of Japanese pear, green apple and herbaceous notes of fennel and lemongrass are backed by a thirst-quenching acidity, delicious peppered spice nuances and a tangy finish.
Red Wine
‘Plane turning right’ 2014 (Right bank Bordeaux blend) David Franz. Barossa Valley, Australia.
Price £25.00
Ladies and gentlemen, please ensure that your tray table is securely stowed and your seat-back is in the upright position. Cabin crew cross-check, doors to automatic and prepare for take-off. It’s not often that a red wine from the Barossa Valley can be said to be ‘flighty’, but there’s a lifted, featherlight quality to the aromas of this Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend, which rise from the glass in a way that’s atypical of the region. The palate is pure and glossy with bright damson, blueberry and fresh mint. Don’t be put off by the whimsical label, this is a serious New World red and it’s fantastic to see a winemaker from the Barossa Valley giving a voice to Petit Verdot and old-vine Merlot, not just the ubiquitous Shiraz.

In the month of Father’s Day we haven’t messed around with our wine selections. Yes, both these wines can be described as being on the ‘pricey’ end of the scale but boy oh boy are they both worth it! Both wines have a real story behind them and their producers, are made in small quantities and really are what the independent wine scene is all about. So, go on, treat your old man, he deserves it!
