Kent Man Exceeds Fundraising Target for Disability Care Home

A Kent man took on a wearying six-hour mountain bike challenge, raising £1,300 for the care home that looked after his sister, Stephanie, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Matt Bernau, 28, and his housemate Ryan Clark, 27, from Tonbridge both took part in the Brighton Big Dog event on the August 13th. After setting a target of £1,000 for Sobell Lodge in Staplehurst, they set off on their challenge, eventually beating their target by £300.

Matt said of the event: “It was a tough course, mainly uphill, so we battled hard to get around. The support we’ve had is incredible, and we’re really grateful to everyone who has donated. It all adds up.”

The money Matt and Ryan have raised will pay for multi-sensory equipment that gives sound, touch and visual aid to the residents of Sobell Lodge – a Leonard Cheshire Disability home caring for disabled adults with high care needs.

Matt added: “Multi-sensory equipment had a great effect on Stephanie, and she loved using it. I’m glad I can give something back to the home and staff because they did an amazing job caring for my sister.”

Speaking in memory of Stephanie, Tracy Haith, Sobell Lodge’s Service Manager said, “Steph was a big part of life at Sobell Lodge and we all miss her very much.” She continued, “What Matt and Ryan have done is tremendous. The whole family are really supportive of the home and still come to visit the residents here. Having lost a daughter and a sister would have been very difficult, but they still want to help others, it’s amazing.”
