Martlets – At the Heart of Our Local Community
12th December 2019Martlets is a local charity providing terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas with the very best care and support. Our expert teams help patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left.
At Martlets we are all about helping people to feel good. We know that the simple pleasures aren’t just special they’re essential for our personal wellbeing. Taking the time to do the things you love, with the people you care about, brings a restorative balance to busy lives. This matters even more when a person is diagnosed with a terminal illness. When you know time is limited, the really important things come into sharper focus. Life is there to be cherished.
Rebekah Whiteley spoke to us about the care given to her mum: “The difference in Mum’s wellbeing, mental health, mobility and confidence since being in Martlet’s care is extraordinary. She was in a bad way until they swooped her up in their arms. The compassion, care and love has been second to none.
“Martlets have gone to extreme efforts to make Mum as comfortable, pain free and happy as possible whether in the hospice or home. Mum turned a huge corner, enabling her to do the things she never thought she’d be able to do again.” The care described by Rebakah was made possible with the support of people like you.
Most people receive care from Martlets in their own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others may spend their final days at the hospice, or to stay as inpatients for respite care or symptom management.
In 2018-19, we helped more than 2,700 local people live life to the full and make the most of precious time with loved ones. It’s an incredible number and we simply would not be able to achieve this without the support of our local community. Every Martlets donor and volunteer makes a difference to the people we help. Your generosity is changing lives and your continued support will help us to reach everyone who needs us.
Only a third of Martlets funding comes from the NHS and we rely on the support of business partners and our local community. We genuinely enjoy getting to know our partners, ensuring everyone gets the most out of choosing Martlets. We’re all about living life to the full and that includes having fun with our fundraising.
There are so many ways you and your colleagues can get involved. Our business partnerships can include, but are not restricted to, sponsoring large events such as the annual Martlets Halloween Ball; your own, business-led fundraising activities, setting up payroll giving or being sponsored to trek the Sahara! Our amazing business partners Legal and General have even just put up Christmas decorations at our hospice and In Patient unit and brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
We want everyone to feel part of #TeamMartlets and be part of what we do helping to make each day better for people and their families affected by terminal illness in our community. Whichever way you choose to get involved, you’ll generate positive PR for your business, engage and motivate your staff, and actively participate in the wellbeing of your city.
Razak Helalat, director of Brighton restaurants The Salt Room and The Coal Shed, had this to say about long term sponsorship of our popular Halloween Ball: “Our staff and customers have really got behind Martlets. We have all felt uplifted by the partnership and had fun in the process.”
