New legislation, announced in 2016, has come into effect that bans “unfair” fees charged by lettings agents to tenants in England.

Tenants can no longer be charged for viewings, credit checks, references, or setting up a tenancy.

Consumer charity Citizens Advice claims private renters in England have collectively been paying £13m a month in these fees.

Landlords have warned rents are likely to rise and choice fall as a result of the ban.
