Xavier Clarke, of Brighton-based XC Photography, talks us through the importance of properly capturing the party season and corporate events in this thought-provoking feature.

Currys PC World nailed it with their current TV advert, reminding us that it is always best to get a professional in. You are not just paying for a service, you are paying for years of experience and training. You wouldn’t attempt to buy a house or try your hand at being a DJ during a big gathering without much knowledge – so you definitely need a professional photographer to cover your event.

Every year, we seem to be surprised at just how quickly the party season has crept up on us – this year more than most. In spite of all the uncertainty, people are starting to book caterers, venues, entertainers, DJs, bands – and many other things that need to be in place before invites are sent out to colleagues, friends or loved ones.

Some people still question the value of a professional photographer. With mobile phones getting better and better, you might be wondering if there is still a need to hire a professional. Yes, there is! To properly cover an event you have to be ready to shoot anything – from speeches, candid shots, people wanting portraits, and group shots, as well as capturing people in action.

Depending on the event and venue, you won’t be able to use off-camera flash and your equipment will struggle in very low light conditions. You may also be unable to adapt quickly. Are you really up to waiting for that ‘perfect moment’ candid shot or those times when you will be tapped on the shoulder and asked for a portrait?

A professional event photographer gets everywhere – to ensure every important image is captured while never getting in the way or interrupting the flow of an event. They are there to do it justice.

And you get more than just photos. You get an expert who can speak to everyone – from the those in postroom to the boardroom. They blend in and make people feel comfortable because, after all, it is their night.

After an event ends, I dedicate hours to importing and editing images, a crucial part of the service. Most events have changing lighting, so each image is corrected and adjusted accordingly. I understand that everyone will want to look their best and take time on each image. So, when you book your photographer, remember that their job doesn’t finish at the end of the night.

Need an event photographer? Take a look at what we have to offer. Whatever the event – from corporate parties, awards nights, burlesque, engagement parties, surprise birthdays, welcome home or just an excuse to get together with your close friends – I have you covered.
