University of Surrey Launches 50th Birthday Celebrations
31st August 2016A series of celebratory events will start next month to mark the 50th year since the signing of the University of Surrey’s Royal Charter and the institutions relocation from London to Guildford.
The installation ceremony of the University’s initial Chancellor was held in October 1966 at Guildford Civic Hall. On Saturday 22nd October – exactly 50 years to the day – a procession on Guildford high street will celebrate the University’s anniversary.
Robed students, staff, alumni and special quests will process along Guildford high street up to Holy Trinity Church, from 10:30am. Stops along the route will include the Guildhall, where the procession will be joined by local Councillors, Mayors and Mayoresses from across the county. Additionally, a range of activities will occur along the high street throughout the day and special giveaways will be on offer for visitors.
Manager of the 50th anniversary celebrations, Trudy Monk said of the event:
The procession marks an important milestone in the University’s history. We look forward to celebrating with those who have contributed to making the University’s first 50 years in Guildford a success and have helped us create a positive impact worldwide. We would like to invite former staff, students and local residents to join us to celebrate this wonderful occasion.
The University is also set to host a family-friendly Open Day – the University of Surrey Wonder Festival – on Saturday 13th May 2017.
