What’s really happening in the world of DEI right now?

Thoughts from the BOXLESS team.

While a huge focus has been placed on the US and statements concerning steps backward in diversity, equity and inclusion, we believe the UK is full of opportunity. We want to encourage Sussex Businesses to use this opportunity to demonstrate their values and support those feeling even further marginalised.

Every year is an opportunity to change and 2025 will certainly be that. But what does that mean? The only way to truly understand what that means, how that looks, or how you (yes you) can lead with this and be the change you want to see, is to ask yourself are we part of the problem or part of the solution? There’s an opportunity for business leaders to implement intentional initiatives that align with their core values, to shape a better future for the UK economy, environment and society as a whole. Bud was a recent guest speaker and panelist at The Gatwick Diamond Business’s Re-energise Conference, where he delivered an inspiring talk on change. A big question he asked himself on his journey toward social activism and the inspiration behind BOXLESS was,

‘If not me, who? And if not now, when?

This resonated with many in the room, as often, we look to others to lead the way but change starts with us. We need to hold ourselves accountable to challenge the norm and be aware of our privilege to build a more accessible, fair and inclusive path and make room for others to reach new heights.

The few major corporations that have scaled back or put an immediate end to their DEI programmes, are not just making a business decision – they’re sending a clear message that reverberates and is felt (heartbreakingly so) in communities worldwide.

Companies with strong DEI practices are 36% more likely to have above-average profitability. This is just one example of the real advantages of prioritising DEI and the direct impact on the success (or demise) of your business.

DEI is not a tick-boxing exercise (it’s literally why we have championed the term and brand, BOXLESS). It’s about fundamental, strategic improvements that touch on everything – from how your employees feel walking through the door each morning to how your customers perceive your brand, and ultimately, how sustainable your business is for the future.

We’re seeing something exciting happen. Many UK companies are waking up to the fact that their professional reputation and employer brand are intrinsically linked to their Social and Environmental commitments and responsibilities. When 76% of job seekers are looking at your diversity credentials before deciding to join your team, it becomes less of a statistic and a real call for change.

Last month, we hosted our first invite only, DEI Leaders event from Projects in Brighton. We brought together passionate social activists, forward-thinking business leaders, and DEI champions who are actually doing the work. The energy in that room confirmed what we’ve always believed: Sussex businesses are ready to be the leaders in DEI and we want to take you on that journey.

The year of change

At BOXLESS We have Three core pillars, People, Planet and Purpose.

Aligning Social & Environmental objectives to your core business goals speaks of a true understanding about the role and opportunity for your business. If not now, then when will you prioritise these objectives? If not you, then who in your organisation are you waiting for? Why not make this year, your year of change?

Unboxing…

If you’re reading this and feeling fired up about making real change, we want to hear from you. We’re hosting our next exclusive DEI Leaders event in Brighton on March 13th, and we’re looking for leaders who are serious about shaping a better future.

These sessions provide the playground for sharing, networking, venting and problem solving. Neither Social or Environmental responsibilities can be achieved by one person in your business, it takes a village!

In these sessions great minds reflect on some the key themes impacting DEI, including;

• The business case to ensure best practice DEI in today’s economic climate.

• How UK businesses can lead global workplace inclusion.

• Strategic approaches to embedding DEI in organisational culture.

• The connection between DEI, ESG, and business performance.
