Wine of the Month
14th March 2019It’s still chilly outside. We’ve no doubt got at least a couple of cold snaps and one more flurry of snow before Spring is sprung. So in wine terms, we are still in need whites and reds that warm the heart rather than chill your boots. And here’s the perfect pairing: a brilliant sprite but structured white from Portugal and a cracking Malbec from Argentina.
Casa de Cello San Joanne Vina Verde 2017, Douro, Portugal £11.50
Amazingly fresh, zippy, wonderfully aromatic Vinho Verde. It has a lovely citrus core, with touches of pear, both of which are finished off with a delicious sherbet-like zing that cleans and revitalizes the taste-buds and gets you ready for the next mouthful. Absolutely fabulous with oily fish, so tuna, or our favorite, mackerel – either in sushi format or pan seared. One of our personal favourites and on our “most likely to be cracked open at the end of the day” list. Plus it’s vegan friendly.
El Abasto Malbec 2018, Mendoza, Argentina, £10.50
An exceptionally smooth, together, sophisticated Argentinean Malbec from El Abasto, one of Mendoza’s new wonder wineries. Wonderfully rich, spicy brambly fruit flavours, with immense legnth and lashings of creamy, but balanced, oak. Absolute stunner and nails all the aspects we love so much about Malbec from the South American continent. Awesome with any kind of pasta bake or frankly a four seasons pizza. You only need something simple to highlight how damn good this wine is.
