Women, Business and Golf…
12th April 2022Can more encouragement of women in male-led sports support inclusion, diversity and more business prospects?
Golf is a cross country sport, which consists of each player aiming to strike a golf ball with a range of clubs into a maximum of holes throughout a golf course. The objective is to get the ball into the hole with as few strikes as possible.
The origins of this sport are difficult to determine, however evidence suggests that golf was initially founded in Europe, with links to the Netherlands and, later, Scotland. During the 20th century, golf became a leading sport globally, attracting players from across the world to compete at this prestigious sport.
Today golfers play at every level from recreational and informal games to leading televised professional tournaments.
There are many attractions to playing golf. The slow pace of the game provides a great opportunity for players to network and build relationships with other players. It is also a game that involves a great amount of skill, which requires players to develop patience, precision and dedication.
Despite the success and international presence of this game, women are yet to lead, gain recognition or even hold significant presence within this sport.
Even today, if you attend a local golf course, it is not uncommon to see few women playing the game.
Golf traditionally is a male dominated game, providing a great opportunity for leaders locally and nationally to connect and network.
As a beginner or even a minority, it can be quite intimidating to turn up and compete, especially when one is so far behind. Sport is competitive… and no one wants to turn up without the ability to contribute and compete.
When exploring why women have only a small presence on golf courses, we found that it is not uncommon for golf shops to not invest in women’s golfing equipment due to a lack of demand. This led to questions on whether this lack of demand could be challenged and whether there was appetite for women in business to maximise on the benefits of this prestigious sport. To support this, we have partnered with Quantuma, Plus Accounting, TPG Sports, Sussex Business Times, The Starr Trust and East Brighton Golf Course, with the aim of making this happen!
As businesses that champion diversity and inclusion inside and outside of the workplace, we wanted to provide an opportunity for women in business to have fun playing golf, gain some new skills and continue to build a strong network.
To support this initiative, on Tuesday 7th June 2022, East Brighton Golf Course will be hosting a Women in Business Golf Day in celebration of Women’s Golf Day.
This informal networking event is suited to women at all levels of golfing. We hope that each attendee will leave having learnt a new skill, but most importantly that this be achieved in a fun and informal female led environment.
This event is ideal for business owners and leaders at senior management level.
The Women in Business Golf Day is suitable for professionals and beginners. All necessary equipment will also be provided.
Tickets are just £46 which includes a glass of bubbly and a canapé lunch on the day. All funds raised go directly to the Starr Trust Charity who are proud to be supporting the Girls Network initiative to help mentor young ladies from the least advantaged communities.
Monies raised will directly help young disadvantaged women gain skills and experience to support leadership and career development.
In 2000, at the inaugural Laureus World Sports Day, Patron Nelson Mandela famously said that, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”
This event may the first of its kind. As sponsors, we hope it won’t be the last. We are extremely proud to lead on this event and champion diversity & inclusion through the power of sport.
