Honouring Piers Street: A Lifetime in Surveying
28th May 2026At the end of March, Sussex Surveyors marked the retirement of Partner Piers Street, who concluded an exceptional career spanning nearly six decades in the surveying profession.
Beginning his career in 1967 with his first valuation report, Piers has since advised on an extraordinary range of properties and client matters. While the precise number of surveys he has undertaken is impossible to quantify, his depth of experience and contribution to the profession are beyond question. Aptly named, Piers Street has spent a lifetime quite literally looking down streets of properties across Brighton and the South Coast.
A third-generation surveyor, Piers started his professional life in his family’s London office, developing an early and enduring understanding of property. He went on to build extensive experience across London, North Norfolk and Sussex, working across both residential and commercial sectors. Qualifying as a Valuer in 1978, he earned a reputation for delivering clear, balanced and dependable advice.
Clients valued not only his technical expertise but also his approach. Piers embodied a traditional sense of professionalism, courtesy and integrity. Testimonials frequently highlight his calm, patient manner, particularly when supporting clients navigating complex or distressing property matters. He took the time to explain issues clearly and thoughtfully, never losing sight of the human side of his work.
Piers joined Sussex Surveyors in 1997, based in the firm’s Hove office, and became a Partner, playing a significant role in shaping its growth and reputation. The firm has long been recognised as a trusted independent practice across the South East, and Piers’ contribution has been central to maintaining its high standards of professional advice.
His work encompassed a wide range of instructions, including RICS HomeBuyer Reports, residential and commercial valuations for probate and taxation purposes, as well as commercial rent reviews. Across all areas, he was known for his thorough, methodical approach and attention to detail, qualities that provided reassurance to clients making important decisions.
Within the firm, Piers was a valued colleague and mentor. His experience, sound judgement and willingness to support others made him a trusted presence during both routine work and more challenging periods. Over the years, the business successfully navigated significant events including financial crises, Brexit and the global pandemic, times during which his steady counsel proved invaluable.
Yet, as colleagues will attest, it is Piers’ character that leaves the greatest impression. He brought energy and enthusiasm to his work, coupled with a sharp sense of humour that could lift spirits even in the most testing situations. This sense of enthusiasm was infectious, drawing colleagues into the office not just for work, but for the enjoyment of his company.
Outside of surveying, Piers is a passionate cricket enthusiast and has shared this interest generously with colleagues, clients and friends. Many will fondly remember summer days spent at Arundel Castle cricket ground, enjoying both the game and his hospitality, occasions that reflect his ability to bring people together.
As Sussex Surveyors looks to the future, it does so with gratitude for Piers Street’s remarkable contribution. His professionalism, wisdom and character have left a lasting legacy within the firm and across the wider property community.
He retires with the sincere thanks of colleagues and clients alike, and with very best wishes for a long, healthy and well-earned retirement.
